Ukraine is the biggest country located in Europe. Total territory of Ukraine is 603,7 thousand square kilometers.There are people who object it saying that the biggest country in Europe is Russia. And it is also true, because European part of Russia is bigger than Ukraine and any country in Europe. But Russia is located not only in Europe but also in Asia.
Geographical location of Ukraine
Ukraine is located in the Eastern part of Europe and has common borders with seven countries: Russia in the West, Belarus in the North, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic in the East, Moldova and Romania in South East. South Ukraine is bathed by the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Over 70% of the territory of Ukraine is lowlands, 25% are occupied by highlands and 5% by mountains. Among the biggest lowlands are Podilska, Pridniprovska, Prichornomorska, Zakarpatska, Pivnichno-Crymska. The highlands of Ukraine: Podilska, Pridniprovska, Priazovska, Volynska, Donetska, Serednioruska.
Climate of Ukraine
Climate of Ukraine is middle continental and has some figures of subtropical type in Crimea. Average temperature in January varies from +4°С in the Crimea to -8°С in the Northern part of Ukraine. In July average temperature varies from +17°С at the North-West to +23°С in the South. In winter temperature may fall down to – 28 – 32 °С and in summer it may be up to +35+40°С.
The biggest rivers of Ukraine: Dnieper, Dniester, Southern Bug, Siverskiy Donets and Dunai.
Administrative division of Ukraine
Ukraine is divided into 25 regions and Autonomic Republic Crimea. Central Ukraine includes five regions: Cherkassy region, Poltava, Vinnitsa, Kirovograd and Dnepropetrovsk regions. Kiev region with Zhitomir, Chernigov and Sumy is related to the Northern Ukraine. Eight administrative regions form Western Ukraine: Zakarpattya, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, Chernovtsy, Khmelnitskiy, Volyn and Rivne (both more often are called North-Western regions). South Ukraine is formed by Odessa, Nikolaev, Kherson regions and Autonomic Republic of Crimea. Eastern regions of Ukraine are Lugansk, Donetsk, Zaporozhye and Kharkov regions. The proposed division cannot be final and should be considered as one of the possible variants. Because these or those regions sometimes related to another part of Ukraine by some geographical, cultural or economical causes.
Political system of Ukraine
Ukraine is a republic under a mixed semi-parliamentary semi-presidential system with separate legislative, executive, and judicial branches. According to the Constitution of Ukraine the President of Ukraine is the head of the country. He is guarantor of sovereignty, territorial integrity, execution of Constitution, observance and protection of human and citizens' rights and freedoms. The President is elected by popular vote for a five-year term and is the formal head of state.
Ukraine's legislative branch includes the 450-seat unicameral parliament, the Verkhovna Rada. The parliament is primarily responsible for the formation of the executive branch and the Cabinet of Ministers, which is headed by the Prime Minister. However, the President still retains the authority to nominate the Ministers of the Foreign Affairs and of Defense for parliamentary approval, as well as the power to appoint the Prosecutor General and the head of the Security Service.
The Supreme Court is the main body in the system of courts of general jurisdiction. Local self-government is officially guaranteed. Local councils and city mayors are popularly elected and exercise control over local budgets.
